Study Abroad Faculty Award

Purpose

The University of Arizona Study Abroad Faculty Award recognizes faculty who champion the transformative power of international education through Study Abroad.

Award

Recipients will receive a one-time allocation of $5,000 in University funds for research or professional development to support continued work in international education through Study Abroad within their discipline.

Number of Awards

Up to one award may be made each year. 

Eligibility

Eligible candidates are career-track, tenure-eligible, tenured, continuing eligible, and continuing status faculty of all ranks.

Emeritus faculty are not eligible for this award.

Criteria

This award honors faculty who have made significant contributions to advancing Study Abroad at the University of Arizona through a sustained commitment to enhancing the quality, accessibility, and impact of education abroad experiences. It recognizes individuals who have integrated study abroad into their degree programs in ways that support student learning, academic progress, and timely graduation.

Specific criteria may include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated impact on the development, implementation, or leadership of Study Abroad programs that enrich student learning and foster ethical and meaningful global engagement. 
  • Evidence of innovative practices in Study Abroad program design, including curriculum integration, experiential, service and/or research-based learning, as well as efforts to expand access for all student populations.  
  • Strong commitment to student success in Study Abroad through high-quality mentoring that supports students’ academic, cultural, and personal development.  
  • Contributions to expanding and strengthening Study Abroad participation through curriculum integration by aligning study abroad courses with degree requirements to create clear curricular pathways to study abroad for students.

Nomination Process

Candidates may be nominated by students, staff, faculty, department heads or associate deans. Nomination packages must include:

  1. Letter of nomination
    • A letter of nomination signed by at least three individuals, at least one of whom must be University of Arizona faculty, postdoc, staff or student. The letter should clearly describe how the nominee meets the award criteria.
  2. Curriculum vitae
    • A current curriculum vitae highlighting activities related to Study Abroad and their impact.
  3. Documentation of impact:
    • Up to 3 letters of support (maximum 2 pages each, not including signatures), at least 2 of which must be from students.
  4. Support letter from the faculty College Dean.

Submission of Materials

Materials are submitted online through Arizona Cultivate.

Review the nomination packet carefully before submitting to make sure that all of the required material is accurate and included. Packets that are incomplete may be delayed.

Selection Process

Nominations are reviewed by a university-wide committee. Official notification of award recipients will be provided to the individual recipient, the Dean of the respective College, and the department head. For nominations not selected, notifications will be sent to both the nominee and the nominator listed in Cultivate.

Recognition

The recipient(s), if any, will be celebrated at a special award ceremony in 2027. Recipients will receive information about the ceremony through email.

Due Date

Monday, December 7, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Awardees will be announced by May, 2027.
