FACULTY WORKLOAD BY COLLEGE
Faculty activity is central to the university’s Purpose, Mission and Values. It advances the strategic imperatives of overall success for our students, faculty, and institution. The goal of clear faculty workload distribution is to achieve efficiency, transparency and accountability.
Faculty workload distribution directly impacts faculty success, annual review, career advancement, and retention. Establishing workloads is a collaborative process involving faculty, department heads and deans. Typically, workloads are determined during the annual review process, with agreement from both the faculty member and department head. Adjustments can be made as necessary throughout the year with agreement from both the faculty member and department head. Department Heads/Directors must submit any exceptions to typical workload expectations to Associate Deans of Faculty Affairs no later than at the end of the Fiscal Year on June 30th.
All workload distributions are updated as needed in the UAccess workload distribution tool by Department Heads/Directors. Workload expectations vary by faculty rank/track/title, college and discipline. Please see the links below for workload guidelines by college.
Workload Distribution and Annual Review:
Faculty workload distribution should also be entered into the Annual Profile system within Faculty Portfolio at the time of annual review for the year that is under review. The peer review group and department head will consider the workload distribution during annual reviews.
- Workload distribution is typically agreed upon at time of hire and documented in the offer letter, and then reaffirmed during the annual review process to plan for the following year. Annual review meetings is when department heads/directors will review and confirm workload distribution for the next year with the faculty member. Any changes to workload should be discussed at the annual review meeting.
- Faculty workloads typically remain consistent from year to year. However, if there are modifications to the expected workload, they need to be clearly documented in the UAccess workload tool by the department head/director. When there are modifications to the typical workload for faculty’s rank, track, and title series, department heads/directors must report details by June 30th of each year to the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.
In order to help guide discussions and to set consistent expectations, Colleges have prepared workload guidelines by faculty track in order to provide guidance. Please find college workload guidelines linked below.
