University of Arizona Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Faculty Seed Grants
In just three years, the University of Arizona went from being federally designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution in 2018, to being one of only nine institutions to be awarded the inaugural Seal of Excelencia in 2019, a national certification for institutions that strive to go beyond enrollment to intentionally serve Latinx/a/o students, and was named Outstanding Member Institution by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in 2020. Coupled with these distinctions, the UA is committed to examining within as we aim to further advance these efforts across faculty scholarly research and creative work.
Research, Innovation and Impact (RII) and the Office of the Provost are excited to announce the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Faculty Seed Grant Program. The goal of the fund is to support scholarly research and creative work among faculty which enriches the UArizona’s designation as an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), advances scholarship that directly impacts BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) populations, and fulfills UArizona’s Purpose and Values.
Applications from single investigators for up to $15,000 are welcomed. Multidisciplinary applications from two or more eligible investigators representing different departments and disciplines may request up to $25,000. A total of $100,000 is committed to funding for AY 2021-2022. Funds must be spent during the following time frame: August 1, 2021 – July 31, 2022.
The Seed Grant Program is open to all faculty including tenure eligible / tenured, continuing-eligible / continuing status, and/or career track faculty across all disciplines and ranks. Early career scholars will be prioritized. Proposals are reviewed on their commitment to advance scholarly research and creative work impacting BIPOC populations, and merit.
The selection process is guided by a commitment to a shared governance faculty peer review process. The faculty advisory committee will be selected based on their own scholarship or creative work dedicated to racial justice.
Inclusive excellence is the engine that drives the value and practice of diversity and inclusiveness at the University of Arizona. At the center of Inclusive Excellence is the recognition and acceptance of the talents, worldviews, perceptions, cultures and skills that faculty communities bring to the educational enterprise. The University of Arizona recognizes the power of a diverse community and strongly encourages nominations of individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds. As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), the University of Arizona also recognized the importance of contributions of the nominee to the HSI mission.
